Detox

What is a Detox?
Detoxing is the use of a diet and/or supplements to support the body in its elimination of any toxins that it has been exposed to and stored in some way.  We are all exposed to toxins in our every day life.  Here are just a few of the more obvious ways:

  • Eating or drinking from plastic which may contain BisphenholA, a known hormone disrupter.
  • Eating processed food where the molecular structure of the whole food has been changed i.e. hydrogenated oil
  • Chemicals in the air we breathe i.e. traffic, fires, factory waste, farm spraying.
  • Chemicals sprayed on the food we eat i.e. insecticides
  • Chemicals in the water we drink i.e. nitrates, fluoride
  • Medication
  • Recreational Drugs and Alcohol

The fact is we cannot avoid all toxins in life and our body must and is designed to eliminate them.  However if our health status is not good to start with and we are exposed to more toxins than we can eliminate then it is fair to say we need to give our bodies some support to detoxify themselves.

Some of the medical profession will say detoxing is a waste of time.  I strongly disagree.  One only has to think about the organs of elimination and what happens to them when they get diseases i.e. liver cirrhosis, kidney failure or colon cancer.  These organs do not suddenly become diseased overnight.  Therefore it is a good idea to carry out some ‘maintenance’ detoxing every so often to avoid reaching a diseased state.  Some of the symptoms that may indicate you need to support your body to detoxify are headaches, excess weight, sluggish digestion, bloating, wind, bad breath, lack of energy and poor skin.

How to Detox
Spend a few days or a long weekend when you can relax eating just raw fresh fruits, vegetables, sprouted grains and pulses, nuts, seaweeds and super foods such as wheat grass juice.  Include Lifestream Aloe Vera Juice to cleanse and heal the gut and plenty of water to flush out toxins.

Cleanse Drink
Try a home made liver cleanse drink whilst on a detox diet first thing in the morning. The pineapple overrides the taste of garlic as long as you don’t smell it:

Skin Brushing
Vigorous skin brushing with a long handled bristle brush is fantastic to help stimulate lymphatic drainage of toxins cleaning the lymph system, stimulating circulation, removing dead skin and reducing cellulite whilst helping the digestive system.  Do not overlook this easy tool to better health. See ‘how to skin brush’ in our literature because remember the skin is the largest organ of detoxification in the body.

Salt Scrubs
Salt scrubs benefit the body in a similar way to skin brushing but provide more of a nurturing spa experience with added essential oils and minerals from the salt that are absorbed into the skin.

Cleanse Kit
Lifestream do an excellent Cleanse Kit to assist in detoxifying the body.  It contains Aloe Vera Juice to soothe the stomach and intestines.  It has Bowel Biotics with psyllium husks, prebiotics and probiotics to move waste from the bowels and re-populate the bacteria in a balanced state.  The kit also contains Chlorella which helps the bowel elminate waste, and supports the liver in the removal of toxins from the body.  Chlorella contains Vitamin D as well which many of us seem to be deficient in.  All these products are available individually as well.
